Forming a hole through a metal bar that has been heated in a forge, then widening that hole. The blacksmith strikes the tapered end of a metal tool (the slotter) with a hammer to drive it into the metal to start the elongated hole. Then, the blacksmith shapes and enlarges the hole with a pointed tool (the drift) that is driven into the metal over the hardy hole of an anvil. The heated hole is further shaped around the horn of an anvil.
